Diwali Inspired Mandala and Tessellation Art

Room 15 have been learning about Celebrations in New Zealand around the end of the calendar year. We have created some Diwali inspired Mandala, or some Halloween inspired, repeating pattern tessellations using some online tools that helped make the mirror/reflection and repetition effects.

Hell’s Reading Challenge Pizza Party

On Friday of Week 1 (18th of October) Room 15 had a Hells Pizza Party. We cashed in all of our Reading Challenge pizza wheels and Mr Malcolm arranged for them to be swapped for 333 pizzas from our local Hells Pizza. They tasted so good, and it was great fun enjoying free pizzas for only reading 7 books (which we enjoyed at the time as well) BONUS!!!

What are your favourite flavours of pizza?

What are your top 7 books, that you would love to read in a week (if you could) to fill up a Reading Challenge Pizza wheel?

Great New Zealand Book Journey

Room 15 has been exploring different New Zealand Writers. Where they come from, and what kinds of stories they write. We have taken on the Hell Pizza Reading Challenge (reading 7 books to earn a free pizza each week). We then created either a promotional poster, a one-shot-video for a favourite book or a 5-fact poster for an author to inspire others to read and find out more about New Zealand writers and artists.

Click on one of the student blog links (along the side) to find out more about the books and authors everyone explored.

Choose Your Own Adventure Stories

Room 15 has been enjoying Choose Your Own Adventure stories this week.

Mr Malcolm read the book House of Danger to the class and some students played the board game version during chill time.

The class was inspired to create their own stories, after discovering Mr Clark had created one in Google Slides, based on some well-known fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters. They were excited to know they could create crazy, silly, weird and fun stories their friends could “play”, and see if they ended up in all the “bad” endings. Getting eaten, squished or fired from their jobs.

Please explore the student blogs to see which ones have uploaded their stories in progress.

Please leave helpful comments for them to use, to finish the stories or to make them even better!

My Beautiful Samoan Pattern

I used Google Drawings to make my Samoan Pattern.

I used the picture I found as inspiration and ended up creating this image.

It was tricky to make sure I turned off my Curve line tool so it didn’t keep making lines.

I enjoyed creating my own pattern, it isn’t exactly like my inspiration.

Have you made patterns using Google Drawings before?

Room 15 – Different SMARTS

This week in Room 15 we have been learning about how we are all SMART in different ways. These aren’t limited to people who are good at reading, writing or maths skills.

The eight different ways people can be SMART are: People (Interpersonal), Body (Kinaesthetic), Word (Linguistic), Self (Intrapersonal), Picture (Visual/Spacial), Nature (Environmental), Musical, Number (Logic) Smart.

We answered a short quiz to figure out what elements of each SMART area we were, and worked out the main categories we most identified with. You can be more than one category, and many of us were up to 3 or 4 categories. Our adults Mr Malcolm, Whaea Sally and Whaea Amanda also completed the quiz to see how different we all are.

Mr Malcolm then created some visual charts to show the different areas are represented across our whole group.

We created Character Profile Sheets and researched famous people and careers that goes with each SMART category, then we personalised them to show how we are each different. We printed them out for the class wall and for our blogs.

What kind of SMART category do you most identify with?

What are some kinds of ways of doing or activities help you to learn best?

Magnificent Music Month in May!

May is Music Month in New Zealand. It is a special month to promote New Zealand’s musical performers.

Below is a simple poster explaining why Music Month is so important. It is themed black and pink, because that was the colours of 2023’s music month, and it is also very eye-catching.

Room 15 have also included their favourite songs within the slide-deck. We will add the linkslater  to any Youtube videos for our songs, when we can find them. Slide 2 needs to be adjusted to make sure all of our songs can be seen.

What is your favourite song or songs?

Do they change depending on your mood?

Do you have a favourite genre (type) of music?

Do you have a favourite music video?

Have you ever been to a music concert?

Book Chain

Room 15 has been reading lots of different kinds of books in Term 1. We have taken books out of the school library, own class collection which we share with Room 14, and explored many online libraries like Epic Books RNZ Storytime and Storyline Online.

We have created a Book Chain to share some of our favourites with our friends.

Room 15 Book Chain 2024

The Rules of the Book Chain are:

1: You must have read the book yourself.

2: Be open to recommendations from others.

3: Choose a book that won’t take too long for others to read.

4: Write a short summary of the book, why would someone want to read it. Include a cover image so people know what to look for.

5: Keep it age (school) appropriate.

6: Add a comment and ‘@’ a friend’s email so they get the link to the book you want to share with them.

What was your favourite book when you were at school?

Do you prefer paper books or digital/e-books?

Levin North introduces …

Kia ora!

We are Room 15 at Levin North School.

We have just begun our Cybersmart Learning Journey with Mr Malcolm and Whaea Michelle.

Here are our introductory slides. We learnt how to replace an image, add and format text and customise the background to our slide.

We enjoyed having a go at taking our photos with our chromebooks. Some of them were funny photos, they were hard to take on your own so we got our friend to take them.

We might use what we learnt to create slides about our favourite TV or book characters.
